Hi friends and strangers (or more likely neither; this corner of the internet is very lonely). I've recently discovered TasteSpotting.com--and Tasteologie and Food Gawker soon after--and I can officially say: I'm obsessed. I've never been much of a foodie. With my limited kitchen, nay, you can hardly call it a kitchen, I never thought that I would be able to cook anything that didn't taste like it came out of a box/can. Well, all those blogs got to me. This week, I raided the bulk spice aisle of the grocery store and bought vegetables I'd never even heard of a month ago. I hardly expect all my experiments to be successful. Yesterday I tried to add some flavour to steamed broccoli and green beans by showering them with powdered thyme. Hit my palate the way I'd imagine crab poop would do. Moral of the story: powered spices go in soups and oils and things that can dissolve them. Not on raw, dry vegetables.

Today I tried something that came out a little more successfully: kale chips. Apparently, kale is considered a superfood. Something about vitamins and antioxidants or whatever. So I guess that takes the guilt away from the word "chips." It was super simple.

Wash the kale and cut the leaves from the tough rib in the middle. Dry profusely. I mean with all the dedication of a college student afflicted with OCD (coughmecough): salad spinner AND paper towel that shit. Cut into smaller pieces (half a palm size?) and toss in olive oil with one clove of minced garlic. None of my measurements are ever exact. I just put enough oil to coat all the leaves. Spread the leaves on a baking sheet in a single layer and season with salt and black pepper. Don't be too heavy handed--the leaves have a flavour of their own as is. Pop in a 325F preheated oven (or measly toaster oven in my case. Sad.) and bake for 15-20mins until they're crisp. And voila! They taste really fricken good...better than I expected. It took me SO long to bake all of it because I don't have a real oven. Worth it though, because now my room smells like a garlic-bread-only bakery. YUM.

Also, I steamed some squash. I can't decide if I should try to make some butternut squash soup with it or just eat it as is with some grilled salmon. I guess if I do anything fancy with it I will put it in another post.

Hey! I haven't done a fashion related post in forever so here it goes. I find myself getting semi bored of recent trends. Too many chunky sweaters to count.. I feel really uninspired. But winter is here and I've been really into outerwear lately. You can probably catch the fact that my style is turning more in the urban streetwear direction. (This post is also inspired by the fact that my G-Star jacket FINALLY came in the mail today!! Pics to come!) Enough rambling. Here's my outerwear lusts of the season:

1. Navajo Jacket by warehouse.co.uk. LOVE the masculine cut and the print.

2. All Saints Texas Jacket. A leather jacket is always a winter staple.

3. Canada Goose Chilliwack Bomber Jacket. The perfect bomber for those -40 degree afternoons, gnomesayin? (ps check out the open-toe boots on the model in the link. AS IF LOL)

4. Wilfred Free Wrap Sleeveless Jacket. Camel = class. Remember that, kids. And the fewer buttons/zippers a jacket is, the more grown up you look. Take that to the bank.

5. Topshop Borg Collar Padded Parka. I love these military parkas because they remind me of Freaks and Geeks. Lindsay Weir style icon <3

6. Mink Pink Bad Reception Chunky Knit Cardigan. Yeah, yeah I know I JUST complained about chunky sweaters. But I have to admit they are damn comfortable to snuggle up in. A must for the rainy months ahead!

Morning after halloween! Woke up super sore but no hangover. My liver is just poppin championship bottles every time I go out fuck ya. There is, however, a very large bruise developing on my left shin. I guess my version of a hangover is mystery bruises everywhere the next morning. I'll post some halloween pictures later.
In other news, IT'S SO FREAKIN COLD. Basement living, man. I can't tell what time of day it is because it's always dark o'clock. And it's always either too cold or too hot. Can't complain though. My landlords give me free apples.

Good morning!! Almost afternoon. This is my first day off of work and damn it feel good. I have a shit ton of stuff to do but I just can't get myself out of bed. #FiWoProblems my bed is too comfortable. I haven't started packing yet, and I leave for Vancouver in TWO days. Every time I leave from one city to another, it's so bittersweet. Still, excited to see the city that I love.

Hello my lovelies. You can probably refer to me as worst-blogger-ever instead of Ying now. Wow, even worse is that I just referred to myself as a "blogger" hahaha sup I'm on a high horse because I own a laptop and take gratuitous photos of myself. Double wow, I just made fun of myself and like half the internet in one fell self-deprecating swoop.

In other, non sarcastic news, I bought white shorts today:

Went shopping for me padre today. Got a sick ass deal on a Club Monaco polo with the moleman. Anywhoo going shopping just made me crave retail therapy. Spring must haves:

1. Silk colour block tank. I have a sudden alarmingly strong need for this to be in my closet. Specifically, in orange or peach or bright salmon.

2. Skinny belt. I see them everywhere but I just can't find the perfect one. It is infuriating.

3. Leather clutch. Again, weirdly obsessed with bright colours for this one. They make em real nice at AA.

4. Chinos. In an off white or a neutral. Perfect summer pant!

5. NARS blush. I've hit pan and need a new one. Best. Blush. Ever.

6. White loafers. Probably my most needed from this list. I have NO summer shoes whatsoever. Just black chunky heels/wedges. These would be ideal for summer.

srrz been busy as balls. Every day is just work, dinner, gym, sleep, repeat. So I got a membership at the new gym near my house and it was a gut wrenching $66/mo. That's more than Gold's!! For every day that I don't go, I feel like I'm throwing $2 down the drain. As an Asian and a uni student, that is unacceptable. So I go and I act a damn fool cause I don't know how to work anything, but whatever. jus workin on my fitness.
Flying to Vancouver in exactly 7 days! SO excited. And nervous. So much to do before then BLAGHR.

So I bought a couple of beauty products last week and I've been using them for the past few days:

Covergirl Natureluxe Foundation

I was pretty surprised at how nice this was. I only use foundations in my T zone and under my eyes, and this one really did the trick. It's light coverage but really buildable, which I loved (I hate cakey foundations). It also stays matte all day. The color is also spot on. It's a bit pricier for a drugstore brand (especially for Covergirl!) but I think it's worth the price. Would recommend and would buy again.

Bumble and Bumble (Un)dressing Creme

Okay so I have stick straight hair. As in if there is a piece of hair under 2 inches long, it will defy gravity in order to stay straight (ie. in a bun). So not the ideal beach waves that this product is meant to enhance. However, it does promise to provide "extra grit" and boost volume, which is something I desperately need. It did deliver (better have--for the price!). I found that my hair kept its volume throughout the day instead of deflating around noon when I used other volumizing creams. The bottle says to put on damp hair and blow dry, but I've found that a dab of it near your roots when they are dry will provide excellent volume as well. Given the nature of the product, it does promote a lot of tangling, but I guess that's how volume happens. A little goes a long way, so I think it was worth the price. Can't go wrong with Bumble&bumble!

Oh and I got these babies:

Bulgari sunnies. Good thing I didn't have to pay lol. The jewels are a but gaudy, but I'm kind of in a gaudy phase...

One hundred!! And it only took a full year ahaha

I'm having a hair crisis. I'm in a lob stage--too long to be a bob, but too short to be anything else. I can go either way and I just can't choose! I'm obsessing over Arizona Muse's cut:

It's a short blunt bob and it looks amazing on her, but my stick straight asian hair would require some perming and a LOT of volumizing product. Probs not worth it. Then there's good old Leigh Lezark:

She has been my hair inspiration for almost a YEAR now. The cut looks amazing on her, but I don't know if I can pull of the sharp angles anymore... the ratio of black to any other colour in my wardrobe is slowly but surely decreasing. I might have to go softer.

What I do know for sure is that I don't want bangs. It took me years to grow them out--not putting all that work to waste now! And I'm probably not going to dye my hair either. I need advice :(

A lab at MIT has finally made a viable artificial leaf, which is able to use sunlight to split water and convert it to electrical energy. The lead researcher says his artificial leaf is 10 times more efficient at photosynthesis than a natural one. I have been fascinated by the idea of biomimicry since I was young. My dad (Ph. D in forestry, naturally) got me to read this book:

It's all about trying to recreate nature's genius so that we can live in a more sustainable world. Preachy, maybe, but it definitely left an impression on my spongey twelve-year-old brain. The author spent a huge portion of the book talking about the biomimicry of leaves--about how we just couldn't figure it out, and that if we ever did, our energy problems could (possibly?) be solved. So you can imagine my reaction today when I read that a lab has actually figured it out.

Crazy how fast the world is progressing these days. You don't realize it day to day but stepping back, it's a huge holy shit moment.

hoooomg it's been over a month. I'm BACK though. Maybe. I'll try. I guess it's a good sign that I don't have the free time anymore to sit in front of a computer and act a damn narcissist. But I miss this and my two readers might, too? haha no let's not get cocky. No one reads this.

On another note, since spring is finally here, I`ve compiled a new wishlist. Why I torture myself with material things I will never afford, I do not know, but here it is:

1. Chloé silk blouse

I`ve been hunting for the perfect silk blouse since this time last year, but the only people who seem to do it right are the ones I can`t afford. Idgi why can`t h&m knock off a silk shirt. Doesn`t seem too hard to do...

2. Topshop crochet tank

Crochet is going to be huge this spring/summer season. Wish they`d open up a topshop somewhere near me!! Topshop online shopping just isn`t worth it when everything is in British currency.

3. Karen Walker sunglasses

Doesn`t have to be Karen Walker, but I love this style of sunnies. It`s quirky but not over the top. love.

It could not be more gloomy out today >:( the weather gods can't decide what would make us more miserable--rain or snow--so they mixed the two together. fuckin vancouver man. I broke my cardinal rule of never using an umbrella for the snow (because that's for pussies) today because the snow was also rain. I am disappointed in myself. I'm writing this at 2:45 pm because I came home, thinking I was done class for the day. NOPE. I have another course 5-6pm -_- I am seriously considering coming home every Monday and Wednesday at 2 for a power nap before heading back to school because a 3 hour spare is pretty useless.

Today was the first day of school. I just paid tuition, and now my bank account is lower than I've EVER seen it. SAD DAYS. Class was okay. I can already tell this term is going to be a lot of work, but I'm actually pretty excited. I love new beginnings :) Also, I watched Black Swan (for the second time) today. good shit go check it out.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

I feel good about this one. 2010 was the hump. Time for things to pick up now :) No new year is complete without a list so here we go:

RESOLUTIONS '11:
1. routine, routine, routine!! sleep and wake up at the same time every day, meal routines, work out plans. I need routine to get my life back in order again. been floating around aimlessly for too long
2. update this blog more. MM err monday. life updates n shit.
3. learn more recipes. need to expand my repertoire haha denver omelettes only go so far.
4. be more proactive about extracurriculars. the overachiever in me is long overdue to come out.
5. appreciate my parents more
6. be better with money. keep track of spending and make a budget. this ones gonna be so difficult...
7. replace clubs with pubs on friday nights. get friends to do same. this would help with #6 also haha.
8. keep better touch with friends in different cities. applies in summer also.
9. be more centered. find my anchor and get my head out of the clouds. this one's kind of ambiguous, but it's definitely the most important. hopefully the other other resolutions on this list feed into this one.
